Sweeping the Shire: Spring Cleaning the Hobbit Way

Hobbit homemaking is not just about the charm of round windows, second breakfasts, and the scent of freshly baked seed cakes wafting through the air (though those are delightful, aren’t they? Tolkien certainly thought so).

This week, we turn our attention to our bedrooms, our cozy burrows of rest and retreat. Just as a hobbit’s home is a place of warmth, comfort, and simple pleasures, our own sleeping spaces should invite us in to peace and restoration. As we sweep away the dust of winter and refresh our rooms for the coming season, let’s embrace this work with a cheerful heart (and perhaps a steaming cup of tea at the ready).

Spring is on the horizon, but there’s no need to go full Took and upend the entire house at once! A little preparation now will make the seasonal shift easier without turning your home into an unexpected adventure.

Think of this as a gentle transition, much like stocking the pantry before a feast… we are not setting out on a perilous journey to Mordor here! Small, intentional steps will ensure your space is ready for brighter days ahead, without overwhelming yourself in the process.

As a reminder, I have two playlists for you! A Hobbitcore tavern-inspired collection to motivate you, as well as a calm mix of cozy instrumentals to bring some peace to your endeavors!

And for my own personal updates, you can follow my personal spring cleaning progress at my Instagram, I don’t want to overwhelm your emails with my cleaning pictures haha!

Getting Started

Here are a few basic ideas to get you going:

  • Rotate and Refresh Your Bedding

    • Deep Cleaning Tip: Rotate and/or flip your mattress to ensure even wear. Wash all bedding, including pillows and mattress covers, to freshen up your sleep space! If it’s warm enough maybe swap out your winter blanket or duvet for something lighter.

    • ✨ Cozy Upgrade: Spritz your sheets with a lavender linen spray or tuck a sachet of dried herbs under your pillow for a touch of hobbit-inspired comfort.

  • Declutter Closets and Drawers

    • Deep Cleaning Tip: Sort through your clothing and donate (or store away) items you no longer wear to free up space and reduce clutter. If something has a tear or stain you’ve been meaning to get to for months, allow yourself to just throw it out. OR set aside time this week to get it done!

    • ✨ Cozy Upgrade: Use a cedar sachet or wool dryer balls in your drawers to keep fabrics fresh with a natural scent. Another option is a cotton ball with a few drops of an essential oil.

  • Dust and Clean Under Furniture

    • Deep Cleaning Tip: Move your nightstands, bed, and any other furniture to sweep away dust bunnies and hidden crumbs. You would be surprised at what adds up over the months.

    • ✨ Cozy Upgrade: Place a small woven basket under (or next to) your nightstand for extra storage that keeps your space tidy and intentional. I thrifted a wicker magazine holder to hold my reading pile!

Freshen Up Rugs and Carpets

  • Deep Cleaning Tip: Sprinkle baking soda over your rugs and carpets before vacuuming to absorb odors and refresh fibers. Essential oils are an optional addition for a fresh scent!

  • ✨ Cozy Upgrade: Lay down a small accent rug or sheepskin by your bedside to add a touch of softness underfoot in the morning. Aldi has had affordable runners that could do the trick on a budget.
