Welcome, dear reader, to a season of wonder and warmth! Though many are still enjoying their spring frolics, Summer Solstice will be here soon enough, and what a perfect time to prepare for and dream about the season ahead. We are less than a month away, after all!
A Hobbit-Hearted Summer invites us to live slowly, delight deeply, and savor the beauty of the everyday. It is a summer of berry-stained fingers, sun-dappled naps, and evenings filled with song and fireflies.
Inspired by the Shire and rooted in a love of home, nature, and fellowship, this is your invitation to step into a slower rhythm, where joy grows wild and small things matter most.
This is Part One of
The Hobbit Homemaker’s Guide to Summer
Savor the Sunlit Moments
Starting off… Let your mornings begin gently! This is the perfect time to step outside barefoot, tea (or coffee) in hand, and breathe in the scent of earth and dew. Watch how the sunlight filters through the leaves. Feel the earth, grass, and dirt beneath your feet. Take a deep, filling breath in and feel your lungs expand before you breathe out slowly.
Early morning sunlight helps regulate your circadian rhythm, syncing your body with the natural world. This soft, golden light signals to your body that it’s time to wake, boosting mood and alertness naturally!
Start and end the day with intention and slowness!
Evenings are for golden light and long shadows. Whether it’s a walk around your neighborhood, a quiet moment on the porch, or dinner under the open sky, mark the day’s end with peace and presence.
Here are a few summer-themed ideas for evening enjoyment:
Stargazing on a blanket in the backyard
Making s’mores over a small firepit
Evening garden tending by lantern light (or street light!)
Reading aloud together under the twilight sky
Firefly catching and barefoot dancing in the grass
Take the dog on a walk or go for a stroll with a favorite person
Stops at the ice cream truck
Basically? Get outside! Birdsong has a soothing effect on the parasympathetic nervous system, helping our bodies relax and wind down from the day. It is nature’s lullaby, inviting peace and restoration as the sun sets. Paired with that morning sun, we can look forward to some sweet slumber.
And we all know hobbits enjoy a good sleep!
Simple Seasonal Feasts
Hobbits know how to feast, and summer provides the perfect bounty! Pack a basket with crusty bread, a wedge of cheese, berries from the farmer’s market, and a thermos of herbal tea. Find a patch of shade and turn an ordinary lunch into a memory.
Host a summer supper outdoors!
Drape a table in linen, light a few candles, and enjoy the magic of a shared meal. Don’t fuss, it doesn’t need to be any sort of fancy… keep it simple, local, and joyful.
Suggested Recipes:
Lavender shortbread
Berry hand pies (you can do this with homemade pie crust or the roll out kind from the store for a bit of ease)
Chicken salad (I’ll be sharing one on my Instagram soon!)
Herbed scones (Try this recipe from Magnolia Journal)
Elderflower lemonade (This recipe sounds so refreshing!)
Bonus: For a hobbit-inspired charcuterie picnic, try the following cozy, rustic touches:
A selection of local or specialty cheeses (goat, cheddar, brie)
Seeded crackers and crusty bread
Fresh or dried fruits (figs, cherries, apple slices)
Meat sticks or a small platter or deli-sliced options. Rotisserie is a fantastic possibility too!
Fizzy juice (Trader Joe’s has my favorite—blood orange!)
Small pots of honey and mustard
Pickles or small jars of preserves
A few fresh herbs or flowers tucked in for decoration, even lace doilies!
(Aldi has an incredible charcuterie selection, for those of us hobbiting on a budget!)
Wholesome Work & Gentle Rhythms
Summer is not for hustle, but it is for tending. Tend to your home, your garden, your soul. Establish gentle rhythms: sweep the porch in the morning, rest after lunch, water your plants before twilight, go to the beach on Mondays, visit the farmer’s market on Sundays.
Line-dry your laundry. Shell peas with the children. Wipe the kitchen table with care. Weed the garden and pick your tomatoes. Work done with love becomes a kind of prayer, so bring in those flowers from the garden and let your space bloom! Even a simple task, when approached with intention, becomes a liturgy of care.
For those with a heavy workload or full schedule, lifegiving hobbit summer moments can still bloom in small pockets of time!
Brew your morning coffee with slowness and enjoy it in a patch of sunlight. Keep a basket of fresh fruit at your desk. Take a five-minute barefoot walk in the grass between meetings. End your day by lighting a candle at dinner or journaling one lovely moment before bed. A hobbit heart isn’t about the quantity of time, it’s about presence within it.
As we move through this summer, let’s loosen our grip on the rush and the noise! Let’s return to the table, to the garden, to the quiet work of our hands. Let’s breathe deeply, laugh often, and savor what’s right in front of us.
There is such holiness in the ordinary when we learn to linger. And perhaps that’s the truest hobbit way of all…
If this kind of slow, rooted living speaks to your heart, be sure to subscribe (if you aren’t already) so you don’t miss Part 2, where we’ll journey further into the cozy details of a hobbit-hearted summer!
