Welcome back, dear friend! If Part 1 was the soul of a Hobbit summer, grounded in presence, peace, and purposeful work, then Part 2 is the hearth. This is where the smells of baking linger, where candles are lit at twilight, and where we gather the golden moments that become our warmest memories.
Let’s step into the kitchen, the garden gate, and the long porch evenings, and shape a summer that feeds not just our bodies, but our spirits too.
Hobbit Holidays & Traditions
Why not celebrate like a Hobbit? Hobbits loved to celebrate the Lithe Days with fairs and festive gatherings!
Mark Midyear’s Day (around the summer solstice) with a simple feast, music, or storytelling night. Make flower crowns, decorate with greenery, and invite a few dear friends to join you in laughter and delight.
Summer is also a lovely time to celebrate birthdays and milestones outdoors. Host a garden tea party or twilight picnic for a birthday gathering, complete with paper lanterns and sparkling lemonade.
Create simple summer traditions to mark the passing season, such as ice cream walks after dinner, raspberry picking, reading a summer book aloud each year, or an annual backyard camp-out under the stars. These little rituals, like the Hobbits' many cheerful celebrations, become the heartbeat of memory and delight.
The past few years we have enjoyed a tradition of kicking off Summer camping for a few days with a group of friends and their children. It’s something we look forward to all Spring! Sleeping under the stars, waking to birdsong, cooking over the fire, swimming, and enjoying ice cream after… I hope this is something our family treasures for years to come!
Outdoor Play & Wild Wanderings
Follow the children into the wild. Wade in creeks. Climb trees! Make time to swim in lakes, nap in the grass, or read by the river. Bring a basket for foraging and let the natural world teach you how to be alive! Let your days be marked by wanderings and wonder. (I highly recommend Anna Comstock’s Handbook of Nature Study to accompany you!)
Tie-dye old t-shirts with the kids, host a garden scavenger hunt, dry herbs or flowers for summer keepsakes, and make sun tea on the porch for some classic Summer fun.
Last summer, my children and I alternated Fridays at the lake to swim, creek hopping, or going on hikes when the humidity wasn’t too intense. This became a lovely anchor to our summer weeks, offering rhythm, connection, and refreshing time in nature.
As someone who has had to make an effort to enjoy all the seasons, these are the memories that have helped me learn to love Summer for what she is!
A Hobbit’s Home in Summer
Summer in hobbit’s home is light and green and full of breeze! Swap out heavy curtains for something airy… like cotton, gauze, or linen that catches the wind and glows in the sun. Open the windows to let the birdsong in and the stuffiness out! (At least in the early morning if you live somewhere abysmally hot.)
Display cut flowers in jam jars or thrifted vases on windowsills and tables. Tuck herbs like lavender or mint in little bundles near the door for a fresh scent every time you pass by!
Bring summer indoors with bowls of fruit, baskets for foraged treasures, and seasonal touches like seashells, feathers, or wildflowers found on a walk. Decorate with bunting or handmade garlands, and switch out cozy winter textiles for lighter, brighter ones; think cotton pillowcases, linen throws, and soft rugs for bare feet.
These little touches help turn your home into a summer sanctuary fit for Hobbiton!
Summer Soul Care
In the Shire, life unfolds gently, without rush or endless to-dos. This summer, step into that same rhythm! Let self-care look less like bubble baths and more like soul restoration.
Hobbit self-care is earthy and grounded; it invites you to delight in the ordinary and let wonder heal what hustle wears thin.
Start a Shire Journal, a place to tuck away summer joys: snippets of poetry, pressed wildflowers, a feather from a morning walk, or sketches of cloud patterns and garden dreams.
Observe Sabbath in a slow, Hobbit-hearted way. One day a week, tuck away your devices and calendars. Feast with family and nap in a hammock. Sing a hymn while watering your garden. Say no to productivity and checklists here! Just pursue joy and rest.
Take your books outside. Choose the ones that smell like old libraries and stir something deep in your heart. Revisit Narnia or explore a new world this summer, go adventuring! (I highly recommend a hammock camping chair for this!)
Make room for ‘La Dolce Far Niente’—the sweetness of doing nothing. I remember reading Eat, Pray, Love as a teenager and being utterly blown away by this concept! It’s not laziness; it’s life-giving margin. Protect your calendar like a garden gate... Say no to over-scheduling. Leave blank spaces where whimsy can take root. You don’t need a fully loaded itinerary to have a meaningful summer. You need space. Room to breathe and time to wander aimlessly or just BE.
Pour back into yourself. Rest isn’t selfish, it’s stewardship. Wake up early and journal with a cup of tea. Feed yourself well, plenty of calories and protein. Take long walks without tracking your steps. Learn something new just because it brings you delight! Take yourself on a “hobbit holiday” to the local woods, the farmer’s market, or a thrift shop for nothing in particular!
Gather with kindred spirits. Share a slow meal under the stars. Host a backyard poetry night. Just meet up for tea or a walk along the river and let the conversations meander. The dishes can wait! They will always be there again… Joy multiplies when shared simply.
Let this be the summer you come home to yourself.
The Aesthetic of Hobbitcore Summer
Dressing like a hobbit in the summer is all about comfort, whimsy, and natural textures, such as light cotton or linen skirts that swish around your ankles as you walk barefoot through the grass. These also breathe the best in the heat! Synthetics stifles and make you sweat. I am a sucker for crisp, cotton nightgowns for this reason!
Flowy blouses, soft aprons, and sun-faded florals evoke that simple Shire charm. Earthy tones like moss green, soft cream, dusty rose, and sunflower yellow pair beautifully with straw hats and handwoven baskets.
Don’t be afraid to mix patterns or layer a pinafore over a blouse, hobbit fashion is delightfully unbothered by trends and full of personal charm. Consider some linen shorts (or shortalls) if you’re a particularly spunky hobbit haha!
Add a few thoughtful details, like a wildflower tucked behind your ear, a ribbon in your braid, or a brooch pinned to your blouse (or bag). As far as feet… if you MUST wear shoes, some sandals or canvas slip-ons work splendidly. And I am a big advocate barefoot shoes for proper splay and foot health.
Remember: the goal here isn’t to look perfect, it’s to feel comfy and breezy!
Let your clothes invite slowness, joy, and a little bit of everyday magic. This is a season to live artfully, playfully, and simply.

Dear fellow hobbit, may your Summer days be sun-warmed and berry-stained. May your home ring with laughter and quiet joy. May you find God in the wind and the trees and the evening songs. And may this Hobbit Hearted Summer restore your soul in the best of ways!
